JPEG Repair to Fix Header and Scan Part Corruption Errors

By

JPEG and JPG are the two most popular image file formats. They are supported by almost every image viewer and have excellent image quality. Alike other computer files and image files, they may also face problems or errors.

The biggest problem with JPEG files is one or many bit and byte scan errors. In case of such errors, most part of the file remains in order but because of the transmission errors or because of some problems of the file storage media some parts of the files becomes unusable. It leads to file corruption and you have to opt for corrupt JPEG repair solutions.

JPEG and JPG files are basically divided into the following two parts:

  • JPEG Scan part
  • JPEG Header part

If the file faces problem with either of the above parts, it may get damaged and you have to opt for JPEG file repair solutions to repair and restore it.

JPEG Corruption due to Scan Part Errors:

Scan errors are particularly hard to handle because the file format of JPEG file doesn’t repeat any sort of bit errors (al least not in the basic JPEG file versions). The scans part of the image file has a feature called sequential compression.

It means that image file’s data region is actually compressed using data from previous data region. If a certain data piece of scan part of the JPEG file is not correct, then decoding results into incorrect data from affected region and all other data regions after this. Repairing of the file is quite easier in this type of corruption.

JPEG corruption due to Header Part Errors:

If header of the JPEG file is corrupted or invalid, then it is quite difficult to fix it. The header part of JPEG and JPG files contains the data that is required to decode the JPEG scan part. A JPEG file header is very prone to errors because of its structure and even smallest error could make the entire header corrupt.

In case of the image file header corruption, it is still possible to use different JPEG file’s header. You can replace the header of original image file with the header of other image. But the files must be technically similar. In theory, a JPEG image file gets its highest compression results only when the header is particularly adjusted for the image.

How to Fix Corrupt JPEG Files?

When you run across JPEG file corruption due to any of the above reasons, then you can opt for the following JPEG repair solutions to restore corrupt images.

  • Restore the image from backup. This is the first and foremost solution that you must opt for.
  • If you are technically sound, then you can replace the corrupt header of the file with another file’s header.
  • Use third-party JPG repair software that works in virtually every corruption scenario.
